Top 4 DIY Wedding Tips & Tricks

You’ve made the decision, and have the courage, to DIY your wedding. From planning the whole shebang, to the self-crafted centerpieces, to putting together handwritten menus and more. I say “You go girl!“. However, before getting your hands dirty and eagerly reaching for that glue gun (yes, you!) let’s cover these DIY wedding tips & tricks.

Have The DIY Wedding You Want

Whether you want to DIY your wedding because funds are a bit tight, want to invite friends and family along for the ride, or simply don’t trust anyone else but yourself to bring your vision to life – doing it yourself doesn’t mean you can’t have exactly what you want your big day to be like. It’s YOUR day and nothing should stop it being exactly that!

Ask, Pin and Collect Your DIY Wedding

1. Ask Around

If you have any self-awareness you’ll know what you’re absolutely great at…and what you’re not so great at. If you know you’re a safety hazard near any kind of cooking device, don’t go baking cookies yourself. You could ask friends and family to help you out with things such as the cookie baking, graphically designing your wedding stationary, being DJ for a day, doing hair and make-up, etc. It’s a great way of getting people involved, saving time (and money!) as well as giving your wedding a very personal touch.

2. Pin It Lady

Yes, this will be your nickname for the months leading up to your wedding. Pinterest is the place of ultimate wedding inspiration and genius DIY ideas. You set up a virtual pin board on which you collect everything that catches your eye from table crackers, fairy light canopies, original wedding favors, to so much more!

Tip: check out the YourOnlineWeddingPlanner Pinterest page (yes, the work’s been done for you) or search DIY wedding for some good old wedding inspiration!

3. Start Now (Like, Now)

No matter how much you’re planning to do yourself, or how much time you think you have, start now so there’s enough time to get everything done. This way you won’t have to rush and  be able to enjoy those crafty weekends without the stress of approaching deadlines. Write down or draw out how many items and trinkets you’ll need per table or venue area and all the decorations required to make those. This way, you won’t need to do the maths while you’re out scavenger hunting.

Tip: before you go out and buy all the DIY things, make sure it’s not costing you more that buying things pre-made! If you’re set on DIY trinkets but don’t have the time, check out the wonders Etsy has to provide!

4. Thou Shalt Collect

Once you’ve sufficiently harassed your Pinterest board and have an idea of what you want, it’s time to collect! Ask family and friends to keep an eye out for anything you might need. Empty jam jars, ribbons, wooden cut boards, fabric scraps, etc. ANYTHING!

At the end of the day, what it all comes down to in the end is making sure that your DIY wedding projects don’t turn into another chore. Keep it stress-free and fun, but most of all enjoy the whole process of pouring so much of yourself into your wedding, involving other people, and making it that much more personal.
